It’s World Environment Day!

With winter well and truly upon us, energy bills can skyrocket this time of year.

Here are some tips for sharehouses on ways to save energy and money.

1 . Cooking together or having leftover cook-up nights

With 3 roommates using appliances at different times, your energy bill can rise quicker than you can say “Let’s just get Ubereats”.

Cooking together or using your leftovers for a housemate cookout can save money, energy and help you bond as flatmates.

2. Take shorter showers

Look, we all know how hard it is to get out of a nice, warm shower on a winter’s eve. But shorter showers can not only help save the planet’s water supply, but save your supply of cash when your water bill comes in.

3. Turn off lights and change to energy efficient lightbulbs

Turning off lights when they aren’t being used is a great way to reduce your energy costs. For every lightbulb turned off when not in use, you can save $15 a year.

Energy saving lightbulbs use 20% of the power used by regular lightbulbs and last 6 – 10x longer, saving you money and time!

4. Wash full loads with cold water and using the washing line

Hot water heating accounts for 90% of the energy used to wash clothes. Switching to cold water can save the average household more than $40 annually, and washing only full loads can save you more than 3,400 gallons of water each year. Using the clothesline instead of the dryer once a week could save $79 a year.

5. Wear extra layers

It may sound obvious, but wearing extra layers can help keep you warm without the need for external heating such as heaters or electric blankets. Be your own heater!
